Stripe or PayPal for Accepting Donations?

The right choice depends on eligibility, donor needs, settlement, and total fees.

Compare Stripe and PayPal for UAE donations using current eligibility, fees, settlement, checkout, and donor requirements.

Last reviewed .

Short answer

First confirm that your organisation and fundraising activity are eligible with the provider and permitted by the relevant UAE authority. If both providers approve the use case, compare checkout experience, donor preferences, settlement, currencies, recurring-payment needs, and the current fee schedules. LGTCS can integrate an eligible option, but should not assume that Stripe, PayPal, or a nonprofit discount is available to every organisation.

The short version

Which one suits you

There is no universal winner. Provider approval and local fundraising permission come first; the product decision follows only after those checks pass.

Consider Stripe

  • Stripe has approved your entity and intended fundraising activity
  • You want a checkout branded for your organisation
  • Eligible wallet payments matter to your audience
  • You need one-off or recurring payment flows
  • Its payout and currency arrangements fit your bank account
  • You want payment events connected to your own systems

Consider PayPal

  • PayPal has approved your entity and intended fundraising activity
  • Your existing donors already use PayPal
  • Donors have asked for a PayPal wallet option
  • Its payout and currency terms fit your organisation
  • You need a provider-hosted payment option
  • Your audience evidence shows that it would reduce friction

What LGTCS recommends

LGTCS should not choose a provider from a generic conversion claim. We first confirm eligibility and fundraising permission, then compare current fees, payout setup, currencies, recurring-payment requirements, integration effort, and any evidence you have about donor preferences.

What you are really choosing between

Stripe and PayPal both provide online payment tools, but the available products, approval process, payout arrangements, and fees can differ by organisation and market.

Stripe Checkout is provider-hosted payment infrastructure that can carry your organisation's branding and return the donor to your website. Eligible payment methods depend on the account, device, browser, country, and currency.

PayPal combines a consumer wallet with merchant payment tools. A donor with an eligible existing account may be able to pay through that account instead of entering card details again.

The practical decision is therefore not which brand is better in general. It is which approved setup meets your donors' needs at an acceptable total cost and can be operated and reconciled by your team.

What to compare before choosing

Confirm every required feature for your organisation and account. Product availability and behaviour can change by market.

Treat this table as a scoping checklist. Confirm features, approval, settlement, and fees with the provider before implementation rather than relying on a generic comparison.

Beyond the price

What you hold at the end of it

Cost is the easy part of this decision. What you own afterwards is the part that is hard to reverse.

The provider account belongs to your organisation

Open and verify an eligible account in the organisation's name. Confirm its payout method, settlement currency, reserves, and withdrawal terms before launch. LGTCS should receive only the access required to build and test the integration.

Branding is not evidence of conversion

A provider-hosted checkout can carry your organisation's branding. Whether a particular checkout or wallet improves completion must be measured on your own flow rather than assumed.

Account reviews and held funds are operational risks

Providers can request additional verification, review transactions, or place reserves and holds. Complete verification before a campaign and ask the provider how an expected volume increase should be handled.

Switching still requires a migration plan

A website can be integrated with another provider later, but stored payment methods and existing recurring arrangements may not transfer automatically. Plan and test the transition.

For UAE and GCC organisations specifically

General provider availability does not establish that a specific organisation or fundraising activity will be approved.

Confirm account and payout eligibility

Stripe publishes UAE pricing in AED, while PayPal publishes UAE withdrawal and conversion terms. Ask each provider to confirm the entity, use case, payout method, and settlement currency in writing.

Model international and conversion fees

An international gift can involve an international-card surcharge, currency conversion, or both. Compare the complete calculation for the currencies you expect.

Check the wallets your donors use

Available wallets depend on provider, account, device, browser, country, and currency. Use audience evidence before deciding which payment methods matter.

Plan language and right-to-left support

If your audience needs Arabic, review the website, provider checkout, receipts, errors, and account-management screens as one journey.

Public fundraising in the UAE is regulated and requirements differ by emirate and organisation type. LGTCS is not a legal adviser. Confirm permission with the relevant authority and provider before launching an appeal.

Questions

What people ask us about this

The questions that come up in real conversations, answered without the sales layer.

Which is better for charity donations, Stripe or PayPal?

Neither is automatically better. First confirm that the provider will approve your organisation and fundraising activity. Then compare current UAE fees, payouts, currencies, recurring-payment requirements, wallet support, integration effort, and evidence about how your donors prefer to pay.

Can I accept donations with both Stripe and PayPal?

Potentially, if both providers approve the organisation and use case. Adding both also adds implementation, testing, reconciliation, support, and privacy work, so it should follow a clear donor need rather than a generic assumption.

Does Stripe work for UAE-registered charities?

Do not assume eligibility from Stripe's general availability in the UAE. Stripe treats fundraising by nonprofits and charities as a restricted business that can require additional review, and its published nonprofit-pricing regions do not currently include the UAE. Confirm account eligibility directly with Stripe and confirm fundraising permission with the relevant UAE authority.

Which provider has lower fees?

It depends on transaction type, card origin, currency conversion, refunds, withdrawal method, and product-specific fees. Stripe currently publishes 2.9% + AED 1 for domestic cards in the UAE, plus 1% for international cards and 1% where currency conversion is required. Calculate PayPal from its live UAE merchant-fee table for the same transaction mix.

Will donors trust a donation page on my website?

Trust depends on the organisation, audience, campaign, checkout experience, and provider. Test with representative donors and measure completion rather than assuming that one brand or payment method will perform better.

Can I switch payment provider later?

Yes, but treat it as a migration. The website integration can change, while existing recurring arrangements or stored payment methods may need a staged transition and donor action.

Do charities get discounted rates?

It depends on provider, country, legal status, and account use. Stripe publishes nonprofit pricing for a limited list of regions, and the UAE is not currently included. Ask each provider to confirm eligibility and rates in writing; LGTCS cannot grant or guarantee provider pricing.
